Easter is as good a reason as any to wear a bow tie.

We had hung three beautiful woodblock prints in the office today.  While looking at them I noticed we were catching reflections of people walking by.  I thought the concept of framing something that was happening behind the camera was interesting.

Today was the grand finale parade for the Cherry Blossom Festival in San Francisco's Japantown.  It was chaotic, noisy and a WHOLE lot of fun.  Families and friends were out in full force.  People were dressed in traditional garb and anime costumes.  The food was great.  I'll be back next year.

The photo is of the tower in Japantown through some blossoms.

I don't use blend modes in Photoshop too often but they definitely have their uses.  The image of St. Dominic's Catholic Church in San Francisco (above) was taken with a 10mm lens (thanks Bill), ISO 100, f/5.6 at 1/160 sec.  In Photoshop I first did some basic adjustments in RAW.  I only photograph in RAW format now.  Yes, MUCH bigger files but they often provide a couple stops of information to either side of what was shot - very useful when you think you got the shot but it needs a little more or less exposure &c.  In Photoshop I used the pen tool to outline neo-gothic church and then adjust the curves for the sky to give some 'pop'.  I then reused the pen outline to convert the building to black and white but set the blend mode to 'Overlay'.  I hope you like the photo - be sure to click on the image for full resolution.

This is at St. Dominic's Church in San Francisco.  The lighting was ideal for this shot.  However, the back side of the church was evenly lit.  In Photoshop I set the blend mode to darken and brushed in color to put emphasis on the central stained glass window.  Burning the edges would have resulted in a similar result but the brush adds a bit more softness to those darkened areas.

This is my favorite alley.  It is in the San Francisco Jackson Square area, behind several art and antique shops.  Jackson Square area is already very quiet but for some reason I always find people in this extremely quiet alley.  Perhaps this is also their favorite alley.

This is one of the over 700 images I took at the Giants vs. Cardinals game (opening day for the Giants at AT&T Park).  It was a crazy and good game.  The energy was intoxicating.  Thanks to Bill for letting me borrowing his Sigma 10-20mm lens.  I hope to put up some more images from this day (on this post) later.

The name 'quoin' is unfamiliar to most people.  This is what you are looking at a detail of.  Quoining typically refers to the corners of a building that refer to or are made of stone.  Many Victorian homes utilize quoining at their corners to give visual strength to the building (despite the quoins typically being purely decorative and made of wood to replicate stone).  This quoining is at the historic (and first) Bank of America building in San Francisco.

More than a little difficult to 'drag the shutter' on a camera phone but this is one of the images that turned out.  It is a pad of Post-Its that were put on their side to form a sun burst shape.  As the camera phone was rotated the image was snapped.
